Sea Quest Hero - Help Fight Dementia

Sea Quest Hero - Help Fight Dementia
Dementia is a disease that ravages millions of victims. With this FREE video game you can help find a cure. Sea Quest Hero is the name to watch!

Sea Quest Hero The game is actually quite fun. You're the captain of a little boat on an adventure in the arctic seas. You're driving around ice floes and glaciers. Your quest is to reach the next buoy.

As the game progresses, the maps you transverse get harder and harder. The game is testing your ability to remember the map layout. It also asks you to go somewhere and then figure out which direction you've come from. The landscapes change.

These are the exact sorts of thought processes that people with dementia have problems with. Lack of directional awareness is one of the first signs of encroaching dementia.

It's not that this game cures dementia or even tests for it. Rather, this game is helping the developers build a baseline of knowledge. Their aim is to get 100,000 people to play the game to provide a ground level view of how MOST people would navigate this icy world. Once they get that baseline, they can then begin to use it as a test. At that point, they can develop scenarios and situations which can help detect if someone is not navigating the world in a healthy way.

We may reach a point where a patient can play a video game and it can help see if they're at risk for dementia or how far along they might be. That will be a far cry from today's situation where tests are far more challenging to administer.

You can choose to play the game without passing along information, of course, but the real benefit is when your anonymous data is aggregated in with all of the other 100,000 players. That mountain of data lets researchers see trends and patterns. That's exactly what they need to then understand how people with dementia are outliers.

So go to your favorite Droid or iTunes app store, search for "Sea Quest Hero," and start playing! It's free and you might just help find the cure!

I played this for quite a while and enjoyed it. It's a fun test of memorization and navigation. It's certainly not Call of Duty or a game like that - but for a handheld find-your-destination game it's quite well done.
